Eye of the wolf ae rayne This is my first Theodore Olsen read I think he wrote a lot of pulp style westerns in the 60 s and 70 s and this Eye of the Wolf reminds me of a modern prose wise the words being used aren t as dated easier to translate and edgier version of Max Brand s stuff from the 20 s and 30 s Action packed immersive with character conflicts driving most of the plot and a smart POV style from both protagonist and antagonist Verdict An easy weekend western The back and forth POV segments shifting between Will Joe and Ulring keep the action moving with a manhunt chase survival and frontier justice narrative that works I m a chase movie fan and this hit the spot. Eye of the Wolf western books I ve read Olsen s work before but this is the wildest most brutally fascinating ride I can remember It takes a sturdy protagonist to survive in this man s stories and even tough young half breed Navajo Will Joe Cantrell barely does By the time I finished the tale I almost felt hit between the eyes with that old proverbial two by four Action is king but characterization is also blade sharp and Olsen writes with such picturesque verve and so many brilliant word turns that I have to imagine he would have made a great poet as well.
