Revisit, Reflect, Retell: Time-Tested Strategies for Teaching Reading Comprehension By Linda Hoyt

This book is full of great strategies for teaching reading in the classroom However many of the strategies can be used in the content areas as well I ve already put to use several of the strategies this year So far my favorite and my students favorite is the interactive notebook strategy 9780325025797 My book is now filled with Post its flagging strategies that I want to try with my students There are sections about scaffolding reading having conversations about books oral retelling written reflections and informational texts There are so many different ideas that the mind boggles to choose just one or two to try out I have used the two word strategy in art class and found it to be a quick effective way to invite discussion about a topic Some of the other strategies that I think will be especially helpful are ones that involve a social aspect like written reflections that are passed among students in a group I ve done this sort of thing before but sometimes get so tied up in day to day teaching that I forget to allow those important opportunities for discussion among my students This is definitely a book worth reading and perusing for any teacher it s designed especially for teachers of reading but reading and thinking skills practiced with these activities can easily be used across the curriculum The book also comes with a CD of reproducibles and a DVD of strategies in action for those who would find that sort of thing helpful 9780325025797 Fantastic teaching resource A must have 9780325025797
