கடலுக்கு அப்பால் bookworm Climax is heart touching First my apologies for writing a review in English for a Tamil novel Though I could have written in Tamil with some difficulty I thought it would reach a wider audience if it was in English Especially as there is an English translation of this novel which is now available Beyond the Sea Areca Books translated by R Karthigesu Though this novel was written back in the 1950s as a work of fiction it now qualifies unquestionably as a notable work of historical fiction This and the other novel by the same author puyalilE oru thONi are the only Tamil novels which are set in the South Asian Southeast Asian theatres of WWII Both the stories talk about the Indian diaspora s especially the Tamil diaspora s involvement in Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose s Indian National Army This novel is set during the Japanese occupation of Malaya and the protagonist and his friends are officers in the INA allied with the Japanese with some mention of fighting the British in Burma This novel is worth reading for all who are interested in history just for this unique perspective of the Asian theatre of WWII Apart from this there is a rich description of the Tamil diaspora s life and trade practices in Penang Though there is a lot of the trading communities mainly the Nagaraththaar Chettiyars and Pillai s slang in the book it doesn t make it a difficult read I was really impressed by how Singaram casually uses Malay Chinese or Japanese phrases with no attempt at translation In fact there are only a handful of short explanatory footnotes in the entire novel One other really impressive thing is Singaram s references to classical Tamil poetry ranging from Elango adigal s silappathikAram to thAyumAnavar There is one particular chapter in which his Tamil chauvinism shines through without any apologies 1940s quotes from classics I m giving three stars only because I couldn t follow the stories behind the world War the way author describes Some of the scenes are still blurry but the love of the protagonist was fabulous Everyone can connect with the story one way or another A beautiful love story set against the backdrop of world war Nostalgic time travel and I love style of writing Batu Caves 200 2018 2005 2009 The Great Escape seppuku Cameo Appearance
