Ecosystems are no longer typically seen as stable entities whose successional trajectories are predictable and linear As such it isn t appropriate for restoration science to treat them as such At best it is an incorrect view of ecosystem function and at worst it undermines our ability to actually restore ecosystem functions and structure The authors of this volume convincingly demonstrate the validity of the alternative state ecosystem model and the multiple pathway threshold model of ecosystem succession Restoration is a nascent field and these ideas are often neglected in restoration planning implementation and monitoring As such the authors continue to explain these concepts implications on restoration and how they can be applied in restoration projects I agree with Adam s critique that edited volumes are often tediously repetitive but I feel as though this book does less of that than many I ve read in the past My main issue is that the case studies presented are primarily focused on dry upland rangeland and agricultural ecosystems It would have been interesting to have a broader overview of these concepts in different biomes New Models for Ecosystem Dynamics and Restoration The Science and Practice of Ecological Restoration Series New Models seems to be a roundup of what Hobbs and Suding see as a new paradigm in restoration science At first glance it s hard to see the difference between the old school continuum succession paradigm and the state transition model explored here Succession describes states bare soil mosses shrubs shade intolerant trees climax trees and the transitions between them And to focus on the overlaps between states or whether a transition happens instantaneously or over several years seems to just mince definitions simply playing with the fuzziness of your definitions of stability and change This question dogs the authors throughout as they keep searching to find the appropriate timescales and definitions to name as stable states in a heterogeneous and rapidly changing biosphere. Book New Models for Ecosystem Dynamics and restoration Overall the book suffers from the persistent flaw of these edited volumes it s one premise chapter followed by like 20 sets of people exploring the same concept Each piece written independently covers largely the same ground just applied to different systems This of course limits the depth that can be reached and makes it a relatively repetitive read All that said the paradigm itself is a pretty valuable improvement over past paradigms It reframes every environmental state into many unique categories and prompts us to ask of each case what was the previous state What is the nature and frequency of disturbance maintaining this state Are there thresholds in disturbance type frequency species composition nutrient load etc that could trigger difficult to reverse changes to another stable state It is historical it sees the landscape as patchy and heterogeneous and asks how those patches add up to similar questions on larger scales In doing so it puts the final nail in the coffin of succession theory a limited polar framework that reinforces the Wilderness Myth and limits our grasp of varied ecosystem types and trajectories While certain elements are so intuitive they seem obvious and barely worth stating this is how all good paradigms feel and I definitely felt that reading New Models increased my facility in grappling with ecological dynamics and history and pointed out some things I wouldn t have otherwise considered New Models for Ecosystem Dynamics and Restoration The Science and Practice of Ecological Restoration Series
