Anthony's manchester ct e the classical American ones mostly Revisiting this Western though after so many years made me realize the perfect composition of the story the depth of the characters who are lured into all sorts of temptations by a glibly manipulative villain and the correlations between the hero s state of mind and the landscape I started reading on Mann in the wake of this experience and after Kitses I came across Jeanine Basinger s magnificent study on Mann where I found out that it was actually the same film that had made Basinger warm towards Mann. Anthony mann james stewart westerns So I was very keen to add William Darby s Anthony Mann The Film Career to my little collection of Manneana and whereas it is not as convincing as Basinger s study it still has its merits The book is divided into eight chapters the first of which gives a short biographic overview on Mann working with the little material that is available for Mann had the misfortune to die before the study of film especially of his kinds of genre films had been established as a highbrow business and so there were hardly any interviews made with Mann In the last chapter Darby summarizes what other critics have written about the director The remaining six chapters are dedicated to the different phases in Mann s life as a director dealing with his early suspense films his atmospheric films noirs his haunting Westerns his two little masterpieces from the 50s the epics and his disillusioned forays into the Cold War films respectively.
