Because Grandmother s life is joined inseparably to the life of the kingdom of Altrue her health fades as King Pernicious of the Kingdom of Turpitude threatens to overrun Altrue Grandmother s HeartI read this book as a child but I didn t remember it in great detail or could begin to guess how old I was I originally had this book shelved as read alouds beginner simply due to the fact that each chapter starts with a full page illustration Even as a fantasy book it has some mature themes the main premise of the book being a battle between good an evil Many soldiers and creatures are killed in various ways but the book is very matter of fact without going into a lot of gory detail It was still however too intense for my 5 year old The 6 and 7 year old on the other hand were gripped by the story and my son complained that each chapter ended at a suspenseful part I have since re shelved this book for older kids and as an audiobook as I found an excellent audio version on the author s youtube channel presumably read aloud by Jim which I highly recommend if you cannot find it in in your library Although it claims to be from a Christian prespective it is definitely no perfect allegory for the Christian walk I also own a copy other than the Lulu edition listed here Written in 1980 it is still an excellent introduction to the fantasy genre for children Grandmother s Heart A wonderful children s adventure with castles magic battles morals talking animals and much else an imaginative child could hope for Grandmother s Heart
