Death and the Spider By Grant Stockbridge
Deathspider spelljammer
When I was growing up I loved to visit our neighborhood used bookstore I m sad to say there aren t enough of these places any Anyways I used to first seek out the science fiction section then the horror section barely look at the literature section although that was the first place I was ever introduced to the three johns Steinbeck Gardner and Irving and then head over to where the men s adventure books were I could spend hours looking at the covers alone possibly TMI but I was twelve and most of the covers had beautiful blonds or brunettes on them in seductive stances and carrying some type of weapon I never bought any of these books in fear that my mother would find them and think they were too lewd or pornographic She wouldn t be that far from the truth Fast forward about fifteen years That bookstore is no longer there but I have found other used outlets that seem to know how to make my paycheck disappear About two years ago I was in one store that was selling men s adventures for a dime each I bought ten dollars worth I really didn t know what I was looking for so some of the titles I bought were in mid series Spider is an example of this First I must say one thing MEN S ADVENTURES ARE SILLY The writing is little better than a middle schooler s essay but the action makes up for it As for plot well let s just say you better have a great imagination and a hearty willingness to suspend belief Okay the book itself This is a tale that revolves around the mystic abilities of one nefarious man Let s simplify One man had the ability to hypnotize anyone he wants and when hypnotized these people are at his mercy Like I said silly. Dead spider mite eggs But I couldn t stop reading the stupid thing In fact I read portions out loud to my wifeshe rolled her eyes at me than once but I was laughing and having a hell of a time When gun play ensues the bad guys would be better off unloading their weapons and throwing the bulletsat least then they might actually hit their target The women in the story are little better than props sexual and physical And the dialog is taken straight from a bad B flick Still on the cover of this book it proclaims that 20000000 copies of the Spider series have sold around the globe That means something doesn t it This is my conclusion some authors have a great idea on how to entertain the masses but little idea of how to write a novel And I m okay with that It s nice to read something like this between my readings of Faulkner or Pynchon And the kicker is this even these literary heavyweights admit to being influenced by these types of books So in summation let me say this I really look forward to being able to read some of these silly adventures Grant Stockbridge This is one of four Spider adventures that Pocket reprinted in the early 1970s In an ill considered attempt to modernize the pulp stories for a modern audience they updated the books For example in the very first line Nita is driving an ice blue Jaguar XKE There are jarring details of silly things being inserted throughout and I m sure just as many references from the original were deleted The stories from the 1930s and 40s were well written and magical reflections of their times and the heroes of the 1970s had their own stories Pulp fans should give the original Spider a try but by all means avoid this line of reprint revisions Grant Stockbridge This 4 volume reissue of the pulp character The Spider is a rewritten set of stories attempting to bring the character into modern times The original pulp stories are much better and stand the test of time without being changed to fit modern times Not recommended Grant Stockbridge
