It's my life no doubt lyrics The blurb isn t what drew me to this because to be honest it makes the story sound a lot gloomier than it is instead I liked the title and cover art I picked up the 1987 edition and Robert Leeson is an excellent writer I devoured his Grange Hill novels when I was teenager Jan Whitfield is about to take her O Levels Peter in the Upper Sixth has asked her out and things are going along okay until her mum disappears one day Her dad and little brother don t cope well but Jan doesn t have a choice and the story follows her as she tries to keep her head above water and then finally manages it There is despair there s a lot of humour there s a terrifying time when she thinks Peter might have got her pregnant I was worried and then as the exams and school finish and she looks towards the future she gets some news that makes her look at things in a new light Overall I d have preferred a decisive ending but that wouldn t have worked because the story is based on the premise that stuff happens and you have to deal with it it s not all cut and dried There s also a little quibble with the language that makes this sound at times as though it s in the early 70s or perhaps late 60s For all that it s a very modern in 1980 book with well rounded characters and a terrific lead in Jan I found out once I d started reading that this is the first part of a trilogy so I ve ordered the other two books and I m very much looking forward to following of Jan s story I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it 9780001842489 It s my life A teenager book Purports to be set in a suburb of a small conventional town in the 1980s However I felt it described the gender norms morals and social values of the lower middle classes in the 1950s or 1960s. Book it's my life with you Easy to read easy to engage in The main character is a likeable intelligent sixteen year old girl and her passage of life in the aftermath of the unannounced disappearance of her mother from their family home which she shares with her seven year old brother and forty something father The book describes sympathetically with how the girl gradually comes to terms with why and how her mother left them 9780001842489
